Parents must understand that the child’s experience of the world is different from theirs, a color-blind approach to parenting is not helpful, and they must help the child connect to their heritage in meaningful ways. Diverse families can be easy for the public to identify, and this can prompt questions by others or possible racial comments, impacting the child’s racial identity and their feeling of belonging in their family and their community. Parents need to practice talking about race in order to become comfortable talking with children about race. Parents need to practice having authentic relationships with people of the child’s race and culture and/or tribal nation in order to feel comfortable building their relationship with the child’s family.
